Sossusvlei, located in the heart of the Namib Desert in Namibia, is one of the most striking and iconic landscapes in Africa. Known for its towering red-orange sand dunes, stark white salt pans, and surreal beauty, Sossusvlei is part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest conservation area in Namibia.
The name Sossusvlei roughly means “dead-end marsh” in Afrikaans and Nama, referring to the area where the ephemeral Tsauchab River ends—usually disappearing into the desert sand. It rarely holds water, but when it does, it creates a shallow lake that transforms the landscape into a magical oasis.
