Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls, located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the world. Known locally as "Mosi-oa-Tunya," meaning "The Smoke That Thunders," the falls are considered the largest sheet of falling water on Earth. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s top travel destinations.

Key Facts about Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe side):

The Falls Victoria Falls is over 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) wide and drops up to 108 meters (354 feet) into the Zambezi Gorge. During peak flow (typically March to May), over 500 million liters of water per minute plunge over the edge, creating massive spray visible from kilometers away.

Location & Access

The Zimbabwean side of the falls is located near the town of Victoria Falls, a popular tourist hub with hotels, restaurants, and activities. This side offers the most panoramic and uninterrupted views of the falls, with well-maintained paths and 16 viewing points in Victoria Falls National Park.

Wildlife and Nature

The surrounding Victoria Falls National Park is home to elephants, antelope, baboons, warthogs, and a wide variety of birdlife. The mist from the falls creates a unique rainforest ecosystem with lush vegetation not found elsewhere in the region.

Activities

Victoria Falls is not only about sightseeing—it's an adventure capital of Africa. Popular activities include: Guided walking tours of the falls Sunset cruises on the Zambezi River Bungee jumping (111 meters off the Victoria Falls Bridge) White-water rafting in the Zambezi Gorge Helicopter or microlight flights for aerial views Cultural visits to local villages and markets

Best Time to Visit

March to May: High water flow—spectacular views, lots of spray (can obscure the view at times)

June to August: Clearer views with good water volume—ideal for photography

September to December: Low water season—better for rafting and swimming in Devil’s Pool, but parts of the falls may dry up
