Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations, best known as a sanctuary for the endangered mountain gorilla. Located in northwestern Rwanda, this protected area spans approximately 160 square kilometers and is part of the larger Virunga Massif, which includes neighboring parks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking The park is one of only three places in the world where visitors can trek to see mountain gorillas in the wild. With around 12 habituated gorilla families, guided treks allow visitors to spend up to an hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat—a once-in-a-lifetime experience that supports both conservation and local communities.

Volcanic Landscape The park is named after the five dormant volcanoes within its boundaries: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. Dian Fossey Legacy Volcanoes National Park was the research base of famed primatologist Dian Fossey, who dedicated her life to studying and protecting mountain gorillas. Visitors can hike to her grave and former research center at Karisoke, located between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.
