How to get to Ssese Islands

To get to the Ssese Islands, including Kalangala Island, which is the largest and most accessible of the Ssese Islands group, you typically have to travel by water. Here are the common ways to reach the Ssese Islands:

1. Ferry from Entebbe
2. From Entebbe, MV Kalangala operates a daily route to Lutoboka Bay on Bugala Island and this takes 3 hours and 30 mins setting off at 2PM daily. This needs prior bookings especially when you are taking a car.

1. From Entebbe: You can take a ferry from Nakiwogo Landing Site in Entebbe to Luku or Bukakata on the mainland, then another ferry from there to Bugoma or Kalangala on Bugala Island, the main island of the Ssese group.
2. From Bukakata: You can also take a ferry directly from Bukakata to Bugoma or Kalangala on Bugala Island.
3. Ferry from Bukakata.
4. On this Masaka Route, you will drive by road to Masaka Town (Nyendo) and then proceed to Bukakata. Here you will find MV Ssese and MV Pearl. These 2 operates several trips and they don’t require prior booking. It only takes them 30 minutes to dock at Bugala Island. 

3. Speedboat/Private Boat:
   • Speedboats and private boats (Nyanza Evergreen waterways company) vessels are available for hire from Entebbe Bukakata, Bugoma or Kalangala on Bugala Island. The MV Nathalie and MV Vanessa are luxurious boats that dock at the Nakiwogo landing site. It takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes while using these MVs to get to Bugala at the Lutoboka bay. They can be faster but are typically more expensive than the ferry.
4. Chartered Flights:
   • Some tour operators offer chartered flights from Entebbe International Airport to Kalangala Airstrip, which is on Bugala Island. This option is quicker but considerably more expensive.
